The Power of Sound

Posted by dorian on December 16, 2008

Featured video: Seeing Sound Waves

Beautiful patterns formed by powder substance, from sound emitted by a frequency transmitter. Sound waves/vibration given visual medium. The higher the frequency, the more complex the geometric pattern. Nerdy dorian9 theory: crop circles were created using a similar method from an extra terrestial aircraft using ultra high frequency sound inaudible to humans.

A classmate and I did a rough job of sound and light for a last-minute science fair project. We didn’t have a good enough radio but it involved a hollow can (both ends off a coffee can, say) and something rubbery yet opaque over one end (we tried a balloon). And a flashlight. Ideally, the sound was going to bounce off the rubber and make the light move on the wall.

I should have cared more about science as a kid. It probably fell into the box of “what am I gonna use it for?” like so many other things did. Little did I know…
